Distractions That Contribute to Crashes Can Result in a Fine in New Hampshire

If a distraction — anything from using a cell phone to snow and ice falling off a rig — contributes to a crash, the driver could be held accountable for causing the accident when a new law in New Hampshire goes into effect Jan. 1.

Violation of the statute could result in a fine of up to $1,000 and suspension of driving privileges for up to one year.

The New Hampshire Freight Carriers Association considers the law a potential problem. Its passage “slipped unnoticed” by it earlier in the year, in part because it began as a discussion of cell phone use by drivers, said Executive Director David Carney.
