Diesel Price Slides to $1.38 Per Gallon

The average price of diesel fuel per gallon dropped 1.2 cents to $1.38 last week, according to the Department of Energy.

The decline was the seventh in so many weeks and reflected a 14.9 cent per gallon drop since May 28, suggesting that a long-haul trucker using two 150-gallon tanks would spend about $414, almost $45 less than would have been the case seven weeks ago.

All of the regional averages were down, with the biggest drop coming in the Rocky Mountain region where the price fell 4 cents a gallon.

The East Coast region fell from $1.385 to $1.376 cents per gallon, led by the Central Atlantic area where the price fell 1.6 cents.

The price fell 1.5 cents in New England and 0.5 cent in the lower Atlantic. In the Midwest, the average price dropped 0.6 cent per gallon, while it fell 1.2 cents on the Gulf Coast.

The price in the Western region dropped 3.3 cents per gallon, spurred, in part by a 2.4 cent per gallon decline in California.

The DOE's Energy Information Administration surveys 350 fueling stations at the start of each week, and usually reports the results on the same day that it polls the stations.
