Diesel Price Drops to $1.48

The national average price per gallon of diesel fuel dropped to $1.48 per gallon on Monday, which was 0.6 cent below the previous week, according to the Department of Energy.

It was the third consecutive weekly drop, leaving the total price 3.9 cents below the May 28 level of $1.529.

At the same time, the retail price of regular gasoline also dropped to $1.601 per gallon, which was 4.6 cents down from last week.

While the biggest trucks run on diesel fuel, a significant portion of the commercial trucking business is carried out in trucks that use gasoline. Both fuels impact the cost of truck service.

The price also dropped in two regions, falling 2.9 cents in the Midwest, 1.4 cents in the Rocky Mountains.

The price was up in six regions, 1.4 cents in the East Coast; 7 cents in the Central Atlantic; 1.8 cents in the Lower Atlantic; 0.6 cent in the Gulf Coast; 1.1 cents in the West Coast and 1.2 cents in California.

The New England region price was unchanged at $1.525 per gallon.

The EIA surveys 350 fueling stations at the start of each week, and usually reports the results on the same day that it polls the stations.
