iesel fuel's national average pump price jumped 4.6 cents to $2.552 a gallon, just the second increase in the past 13 weeks and the biggest one-week gain since a 7.5-cent surge in early August, the Energy Department said Monday.

Gasoline, meanwhile, rose 3.2 cents to 2.232, DOE said, in just the second increase in the past 14 weeks. Gas prices are 6.4 cents below the same week a year ago.

Diesel’s average price is 5 cents lower than the same time last year.

Diesel rose in all five national regions and in California, which DOE breaks out separately. The West Coast reported the biggest increase, rising 6.7 cents to $2.673 a gallon from 2.606 last week.

Crude oil futures fell below $59 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday after topping $61 a barrel on Friday, Bloomberg reported.

Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
