The national average price of diesel fuel fell another 3.3 cents to $2.186 a gallon, while gasoline rose for the sixth time in seven weeks, Energy Department said.

The decline left the price $1.21 below the same week last year, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations Tuesday.

Diesel has now fallen in 29 of 31 weeks since topping out at $4.764 a gallon on July 14, dropping $2.578 since the all-time record.

Trucking’s main fuel is now at its lowest level since registering $2.16 on May 30, 2005.

Gasoline, meanwhile, continued its recent upward track, rising 3.8 cents to $1.964, DOE said.

Gas — which has risen 35.1 cents from an almost five-year low of $1.613 seven weeks ago — is $1.078 less than the same week a year ago.

Crude oil fell $2.58 to settle at $34.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.

This week’s survey was released on Tuesday because of the Presidents’ Day holiday Monday.
