Daimler Trucks North America is recalling some 2008-2009 Sterling model trucks that are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion that could cause the inflator to rupture, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The recall potentially affects about 2,500 Sterling Bullet 4500 and 5500 model trucks that were manufactured between Oct. 15, 2007, and Nov. 10, 2008. DTNA discontinued its Sterling truck line in early 2009.

The recall was initiated by Japan’s Takata Corp., which is involved in car and truck air bag recalls affecting millions of vehicles.

In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the driver or other occupants, NHTSA said in its June 9 notice.

The recall is expected to begin Aug. 8. DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver’s frontal air bag free of charge. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-684.
