ngine maker Cummins Inc. said it formed a joint venture with Chinese company Shaanxi Automobile Group to develop Cummins’ ISM 11-liter heavy-duty engine at a new production facility to be built in the Chinese city of Xi’an.

Cummins said it will invest $24 million to build the plant, which it said should be open by the third quarter of 2006.

Cummins uses the 11-liter, fully electronic ISM engine platform, which ranges between 305 horsepower and 440 hp, for vehicles weighing between 26 tons and 44 tons, the company said.

The Chinese market for heavy-duty engines is expected to be 200,000 units, Cummins said.

The joint venture should result in annual production of 50,000 units, Cummins said.

Earlier this year, Cummins announced a joint venture with Swedish truck manufacturer Scania AB to develop a new fuel system for heavy-duty trucks.
