efrigerated truckload carrier C.R. England said it has purchased third-party logistics company Carson Transport for an undisclosed sum.

C.R. England, Salt Lake City, said the acquisition of Carson, based in San Ramone, Calif., will strengthen England's logistics division as it plans to enter the less-than-truckload refrigerated hauling business.

Carson specializes in brokering LTL shipments for perishable food manufacturers.

Carson will be absorbed by England Logistics, said Sean Snow, vice president of the logistics division. He said C.R. England made a brief foray into the LTL business in the mid 1980s.

C.R. England said it will relocate some of Carson's assets to Salt Lake City and retain both of Carson’s sales associates.

C.R. England, which reported gross revenue of $500 million in 2004, is ranked No. 37 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire motor carriers.

It is the second-largest U.S. reefer hauler on the list, behind Prime Inc.
