ConocoPhillips said it plans to add more than 300 propane-powered trucks to its oil and gas fleet during the next five years.

Roush CleanTech, a supplier of alternative fuel vehicle technology, said ConocoPhillips made the decision after testing its propane vehicles for thousands of miles in northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado since 2011.

The vehicles will be light- and medium-duty Ford trucks outfitted with propane autogas fuel systems, the companies said.

“The addition of propane autogas trucks will greatly reduce ConocoPhillips’ carbon footprint while using a fuel they produce here in the U.S.,” Todd Mouw, Roush CleanTech’s vice president of sales and marketing, said in the May 13 announcement.

Each propane autogas truck emits about 67,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime than a gasoline-powered vehicle, the supplier said, adding that propane autogas is about 30% cheaper than gasoline on average.

Roush CleanTech designs, manufactures and installs propane autogas fuel systems for light- and medium-duty Ford commercial vehicles and Blue Bird school buses. The company is a division of Roush Enterprises in Livonia, Michigan.
