CN Orders 75 New High-Powered Locomotives

anadian National Railway said Wednesday it ordered 75 new high-horsepower locomotives from two builders.

The orders “will upgrade CN's motive-power fleet at a time of continued growth in all of our businesses, including import/export of both bulk shipments and intermodal traffic,” said E. Hunter Harrison, CN’s chief executive officer.

CN, Canada’s largest freight railroad, said it will take delivery of 50 locomotives from GE Transportation Rail, a unit of General Electric Co., and 25 from Electro-Motive Diesel, starting in the fourth quarter, with completion by mid-2006.



The railroad also said it negotiated options, effective through the end of 2008, to acquire another 72 locomotives.
