Cleveland Considers Restricting Hazmat Shipments by Railroad

Cleveland city councilman introduced legislation prohibiting shipments of certain hazardous materials by rail through the city’s downtown and lakefront area along Lake Erie.

The proposed measure does not apply to trucks because an ordinance is already in place addressing hazmat shipments on highways, councilman Matt Zone told Transport Topics.

The proposal, similar to a law in the District of Columbia that a federal court has blocked, drew opposition from a member of Congress, as well as representatives from the trucking and railroad industries.
