Caterpillar to Cut Worker Hours at Ind. Engine Plant

Heavy equipment and diesel engine maker Caterpillar Inc. said it will cut hours at least in half for 985 workers in its Lafayette, Ind., plant, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The company said in a state filing that the reductions at the 1,900-employee plant would begin in August and last for up to six months. The cut is the second work reduction announced this month and the third in two months for the Lafayette plant, AP said.

The plant, which manufactures diesel engines, announced furloughs earlier this month, in addition to layoffs announced in March.

“Caterpillar is making these decisions in order to best position the company for long-term success and competitiveness in the global market,” the company said in a statement.
