federal judge said as many as 11,000 African American and Latino workers at FedEx Corp. can sue as a group on claims FedEx discriminated against minority employees in its Western region, Bloomberg reported.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco certified a 2003 lawsuit against FedEx, filed by eight current and former employees, as a class action, Bloomberg said.
The move expands the case to include 10,000 workers who load and unload freight and 1,000 operations managers, said Jim Finberg, an attorney at Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein who represents the workers.
Sandra Munoz, a spokeswoman at FedEx, said the company would appeal the ruling, saying the company "firmly disagree with the court’s ruling," Bloomberg reported.
FedEx is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
