Carriers Show Preference for Low-Tech Options

While many trucking companies have worked at improving security around their facilities and equipment since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, most of the new precautions aren’t really new at all.

And although high-tech solutions to security problems are getting a lot of attention, it’s the low-tech solutions — locks, seals, fences and the like — that are getting the bulk of the work.

Seals and “special locks” are being used more by Kelly Wagner, owner of Wagner Trailer Rental, Chattanooga, Tenn. In addition to locks on doors, he said he has installed kingpin locks on his 400 trailers. The devices prevent the unauthorized uncoupling of a trailer from its highway tractor.
