Cargo Volume Rose 16% in 2010 at Port of New York/New Jersey

Cargo volumes rose 16% in 2010 over the previous year at the Port of New York and New Jersey, the agency that oversees it reported.

Container traffic in the port was 5,292,020 20-foot equivalent units, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said, compared with 4,561,527 in 2009. The rate is below the 2007 level, before the economic downturn.

Loaded container imports grew 14.9% in the year to 2,579,093 units, while exports gained 9% to 1,518,327 units.

The port includes four marine container terminals in the New York metropolitan area.
