Canadian Economy, Manufacturing Expand

anada’s economy expanded a more-than-expected 0.5% in August, led by gains at factories, wholesalers and oil and gas production, Bloomberg reported Monday.

Many U.S. and Canadian trucking firms transport manufactured and other goods across the two nations' border.

The increase in the world’s eighth-largest economy, reported by government agency Statistics Canada, compares with a revised 0.2% gain in July and was greater than a 0.4% predicted by economists, Bloomberg said.



Manufacturing rose 1.7%, the most since June 2004, led by transportation equipment and plastic and rubber products.

Mining, oil and gas extraction rose 0.7%, and wholesaling rose 1.4%.
