Bush Tells ATA He'll Fight Fuel Tax Hike

President Bush addresses ATA executives at a private briefing in the Old Executive Office Building.WASHINGTON — President Bush shared his view of the world and nation Feb. 11 during a private meeting with about 150 members of American Trucking Associations, and promised to fight against fuel tax increases and for more highway spending.

Bush met privately with ATA’s leadership for about 15 minutes and then spoke to the entire group for more than 30 minutes, in what is believed to be the first such session between a sitting U.S. president and ATA.



In a small conference room of the Old Executive Office Building next door to the White House, Bush told the group, “I’m opposed to an increase in the gasoline tax.” He was roundly applauded.
