Bendix Expects Stability-Control Use to Grow

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Officials from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems said they expect sales of electronic stability control systems and other safety technologies to continue to grow before federal mandates require use of such systems in all new trucks.

“More manufacturers and fleets than ever before are looking to the advantages of the Bendix ESP system,” said Scott Burkhart, vice president and general manager of controls and modules for Bendix.

Officials from Elyria, Ohio-based Bendix introduced electronic stability control in 2005, and its sales topped 300,000 units last year.

“It took six full years for Bendix to reach 100,000 units sold, but only about half that time to triple it,” Burkhart said here March 26 during a company presentation at the start of the Mid-America Trucking Show.

A long-delayed final rule requiring electronic stability control for heavy trucks is expected to be published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in October.

Bendix officials said future rulemakings will involve collision-mitigation systems, although those rules are likely several years away.
