Holiday Driving to Rise to Highest Level Since 2007, AAA Says

The number of Americans driving during the Independence Day holiday will rise to the highest level since 2007, according to AAA.

More than eight in 10 travelers, or about 34.8 million people, will travel by automobile July 2-6, according to the motorist group.

An estimated 41 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home, a 1.9% rise from last year, AAA said.

“In line with tradition, most travelers are celebrating their newfound summer freedom with an all-American road trip,” AAA chief operating officer Marshall Doney said in a statement.

“With school out for summer, the Fourth of July holiday is typically the busiest summer travel holiday, with 5 million more Americans traveling compared to Memorial Day weekend,” Doney said.

Travel volume for Independence Day has increased four of the past five years. It is expected to be more than 6% higher than the average of the past 10 years, according to AAA.
