Nafta Surface Trade Rises 1.2% in April

Sam Hodgson/Bloomberg News

U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico rose 1.2% in April to $100.1 billion from the same month last year, the Department of Transportation reported June 26.

Trucks carried 60.3% of trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners, up 0.7% year-over-year.

Trucks carried $30.6 billion of exports and $29.8 billion of imports, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported.

U.S.-Canada truck trade rose 0.4%, with trucks carrying 54.4% of the $55.8 billion in freight. Rail trade fell 6.5%, with an 11.3% decline in imports, due in part to lower vehicles and parts.

U.S.-Mexico truck trade rose 1.1% year-over-year, with trucks carrying two-thirds of the $44.4 billion in trade with that country.

Pipeline trade rose by the most of any mode, with exports doubling to $1.8 billion and imports gaining 17% to $6.9 billion, BTS said.
