ATRI Seeks Driver Input on HOS, Detention Time

Bruce Harmon/Trans Pixs

The American Transportation Research Institute launched two online surveys targeting commercial truck drivers’ input on critical operational issues.

The survey will gauge drivers’ feedback on new federal hours-of-service rules and detention time effects on safety and productivity.

The HOS survey is a continuation of the driver data collection first reported in the November 2013 ATRI release and designed to further quantify the rule’s impacts on commercial drivers since it took effect last July.

The second survey is a first step in ATRI’s study on detention-time impacts on safety, productivity and compliance.  It seeks to evaluate the effects of shippers and receivers on truck drivers’ safety, productivity and HOS compliance.

The detention-time study also will utilize ATRI’s extensive truck position database to model the impact of driver delay on truck travel times at key distribution points around the country.

The two surveys, available online at ATRI’s website,, will remain open through early May.
