Ohio Turnpike Cracks Down on Toll Cheats

The Ohio Turnpike has put an end to a system under which some truckers would avoid tolls on the road, the Associated Press reported.

Truckers had been able to evade automated fare machines to save up to $40 a trip across the 241-mile toll road, AP reported, citing David Miller, the turnpike’s director of audit and internal control.

Turnpike officials told the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper that that the turnpike updated its toll-collecting system to deter the scam, under which some truckers would claim they lost a toll ticket, then use the ticket when going the other direction in order to pay a lower toll, AP said.

The turnpike now charges truckers the full, cross-state fare if they exceed a certain time limit between entry and exit on the toll road, though officials did not want to publicize the time limit, AP reported.
