Ballard Truck Center, a fifth-generation family-owned dealership, announced it became the first certified electric vehicle dealer for Mack Trucks and Volvo Truck North America in Massachusetts at its Tewksbury location. Mack and VTNA are brands of Volvo Group.

The Tewksbury location is ideally situated to support and service customers in the Boston market, the company said. The dealership upgraded one service bay at the Tewksbury location to be dedicated to battery-electric trucks, and trained three of its technicians to perform maintenance and repair. The 31,000-square-foot branch has $1.5 million in parts inventory.

The site will service and support the Mack LR Electric, Mack’s first fully electric Class 8 refuse truck, and Volvo’s heavy-duty Volvo VNR electric model.

“Ballard Truck Center has been keeping New England rolling for more than 100 years, and we have continued to adapt and expand our business to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” Robert Picking, head of business development for Ballard Truck Center, said in a release.

Launched in March 2022, the next-generation Mack LR Electric features standard 376 kilowatt hour total battery capacity. Twin electric motors produce 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 pound-feet of peak torque output from zero RPM.

Four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries, charged through a 150-kilowatt, SAE J1772-compliant charging system, power the vehicle and all onboard accessories through 12V, 24V and 600V circuits. The two-stage regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from stops the vehicle makes each day, Mack said.

The Volvo VNR Electric model was designed for fleet operators supporting local and regional distribution, pickup and delivery, and food and beverage distribution. The next-generation Volvo VNR Electric, which can cover up to 275 miles on a single charge, began production in Q2 2022.

Founded in 1906 as a blacksmith shop, Ballard Truck Center operates five locations in Massachusetts in Tewksbury, Avon, West Springfield, West Wareham and Worcester, as well as one in Johnston, R.I. — Transport Topics
