Mayor Kasim Reed (D), who will address the group Sept. 12, has emphasized his support for providing traveling options to commuters and freight haulers. The collapse this year of part of a bridge along Interstate 85 reinforced his view on the need to ensure transit, pathways, and various roadways are available for businesses and the public in case of emergencies.

“Having alternatives, whether alternative roads or trains, among others, is a part of resiliency,” Reed told federal lawmakers in April. Testifying on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, he also praised the state’s recent approval of a higher gas tax, adding, “But we need to do more and the city of Atlanta is showing the way.”

Organizers of the conference promise to deliver for attendees in-depth analysis, relevant updates and industry insight.

“General sessions will highlight and stimulate conversations focusing on the future of transportation and shared and autonomous vehicles,” said Emanuela Stocchi, the group’s president.
