merican Trucking Associations on Friday petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to require that all new heavy-duty trucks be built with speed limit-ers that allow the vehicles to travel no faster than 68 miles-per-hour.

The trucking group also asked the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to pro-hibit tampering with speed limiters or adjusting the devices to permit speeds greater than 68 miles-per-hour, ATA said in a statement.

The organization said the initiative was aimed at reducing the amount of speed-related crashes on the nation’s highways.
