ATA, ATRI, CVSA, NATSO Foundation Partner in Truck Parking Initiative

The American Trucking Associations, the American Transportation Research Institute, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and the National Association of Truck Stop Operators Foundation will announce a new initiative to address the ongoing issue of truck parking at a press conference in Washington, D.C., on May 18.

The Truck Parking Leadership Initiative will focus on sharing truck parking availability information with the nation’s professional truck drivers. ATA President Bill Graves, CVSA Executive Director Collin Mooney, Natso Foundation President Lisa Mullings and ATRI Vice President Dan Murray will be on hand at the event, along with Reps. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and Paul Tomko (D-N.Y.).

Rep. Bill Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; Scott Darling, acting administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; Greg Nadeau, administrator of the Federal Highway Administration; and John Lyboldt, president of the Truckload Carriers Association, are other invited guests.

In a survey released by FHWA on Aug. 21, most states reported truck parking shortages. More than three quarters of drivers reported frequent problems with finding safe parking locations when they needed to rest. According to FHWA’s Beyond Traffic study, the amount of freight moving in the United States will grow by 45% by 2040.
