merican Airlines’ cargo division said Thursday was increasing its fuel surcharge for both domestic and international shipments, effective Sept. 5.

The airline said it was raising the fuel surcharge to 20 cents from 18 cents a pound for domestic shipments, and to 50 cents a kilogram from 45 cents for most U.S.-originated international shipments.

The fuel surcharge also will be applied, in local currency, for most non-U.S.-origin shipments, unless the adjustment is not allowed for regulatory reasons, American said in a statement.

Other changes include the addition of two new trigger points to the fuel index to help in projecting future increases, and an increase from $1.00 to $3.00 per shipment in the surcharge associated with American's Priority Parcel Service product.

The fuel index is based upon an average of the five U.S. jet-fuel spot markets.

American’s combined network fleet numbers more than 1,000 aircraft. The airline said it provides one of the largest cargo networks in the world, with cargo terminals and interline connections available in most countries worldwide.
