img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>Mobile communications provider Aether Systems Inc. announced it is now offering GeoTracs, a satellite-based system for monitoring untethered trailers and other assets.

Frank Briganti, president of Aether's Transportation and Logistics division, said in an interview that the GeoTracs system is designed to alert fleets when unexpected events occur, rather than provide periodic updates on a regular timetable.

Users can program the software to provide arrival and departure times, and monitor out-of-route travel, trailer disconnection or door openings and other events affecting a load. The information can be electronically delivered to a desktop or wireless device.

Aether, known for its wireless fleet-management system MobileMax, developed GeoTracs in coordination with the Mobilacomm Eagle division of BOT Engineering in Canada.

BOT Engineering provided the system its onboard Global Positioning System receiver and communications hardware, and TransCommunications Inc. provided the software.
