AASHTO Appoints Iowa DOT Director Trombino President

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials board of directors on Sept. 28 elected Iowa Department of Transportation Director Paul Trombino III association president.

Trombino succeeds John Cox, a former Wyoming Department of Transportation director who was appointed AASHTO president in November.

David Bernhardt, commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation, was elected vice president of the association.

“I've spent more than two decades in transportation; this ranks at the top of my list of extraordinary moments, and I approach it with great humility," Trombino said in a statement.

While he plans to continue pursing AASHTO's policy priorities, including congressional action on a new surface transportation bill, Trombino primarily will focus on overseeing member departments.

Trombino said he will emphasize implementing AASHTO's new strategic plan, including completing a thorough review of the association's committee structure.

"Transportation powers the creation of wealth across the United States, unleashing opportunity for economic activity and quality of life," Trombino said.

Trombino was appointed director of the Iowa DOT in May 2011. He was responsible for a $1 billion annual budget, 3,000 employees, 9,400 miles of highways and 4,300 bridges.

Trombino is a member of the AASHTO executive committee and chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation Communications. Before joining Iowa DOT, Trombino worked at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 17 years.

He also spent four years in the finance and banking industry in Chicago and Washington, D.C., earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Bernhardt was appointed commissioner of the Maine DOT in February 2011, where he has held several positions since 1984.
