The Maryland State Police and affiliated law enforcement agencies had a surprise for 438 truckers on May 9, a surprise inspection on the Capital Beltway around Washington, D.C.

More than a quarter of the trucks, 113, were ordered out of service until their violations were corrected. Tires, with 27 violations, were the leading culprit, said Captain Michael Gelormino of the Maryland State Police. One truck was 12 tons overweight. All told, 115 citations were written along with 251 warnings.

The Maryland State Police usually performs the inspections closer to the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Roadcheck — which takes place June 7-9 — but after being rained out last year, the event was moved up to make sure it would happen before the busy summer driving season.

“We were hoping that the numbers would have gone down this year, but they were about the same as they were in 2014 with about 25% of the trucks being put of out service,” Gelormino said.

Vehicles were diverted to a parking lot at FedEx Field in Landover for inspection.
