Tighter emissions standards for heavy-duty engines produced starting in 2027 will make leasing more attractive, said Dean Vicha, president of NationaLease.

Order season for North American original equipment manufacturers typically kicks off in September, but this past fall and winter saw a lag in commitments.

American Trucking Associations is asking EPA to re-evaluate and make adjustments to its forthcoming nitrogen oxide emissions rules for 2027 model-year heavy-duty trucks.

A rosier picture is certainly welcome after what Cummins Chief Financial Officer Mark Smith called “a long dry spell” for the heavy-duty truck sector in North America.

“We are marching forward as though this emissions regulation lands at the beginning of 2027,” said Dan Kayser, executive vice president of commercial operations at International.

“We are encouraged by several proposed adjustments that should help lower costs and ease implementation,” ATA Vice President of Energy and Environmental Affairs Patrick Kelly said.

“Paccar delivered good revenues and net income in the third quarter of 2025. Peterbilt, Kenworth and DAF’s excellent trucks contributed to the good results,” said CEO Preston Feight.

"With prolonged weakness in freight demand and inflationary cost pressures, the rule’s 2027 implementation timeline threatens to intensify strain across our industry," ATA said.

EPA has yet to announce a timeline for the reconsideration of the GHG standards or re-evaluation of the NOx rule. Rulemakings typically take two or three years to formulate.

Fleets and Class 8 truck manufacturers are running into many challenges preparing for the updated NOx regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency, coming into effect in 2027.
