“Since 2004, EPA and the business community have collaborated through the SmartWay Partnership to reduce the economic and environmental costs of goods movement, a vital sector of our national economy,” said Christopher Grundler, Director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation & Air Quality. “This year’s award-winning freight carriers, shippers and third-party logistics companies demonstrate that they can move more goods, more miles, while using less fuel. These firms are not only serving the growing needs of their customers — they are also doing their part to keep our environment clean and protect human health.”

ATA President Chris Spear said, “EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is an example of how the trucking industry can work in a way that improves the environmental sustainability of the global supply chain. We are honored to partner with SmartWay in a joint effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce fuel use within the trucking sector. The EPA has chosen companies that genuinely desire to improve their efficiency while continuing to lead the industry. We are grateful that their work is being recognized.”

The agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is a market-driven initiative that empowers businesses to move goods in a clean, energy-efficient manner while protecting public health and reducing the impacts of climate change. Demonstration of a commitment to corporate sustainability and social responsibility through SmartWay provides for a more competitive and environmentally friendly business environment.

SmartWay Partners since 2004 have saved 170.3 million barrels of oil — the equivalent of eliminating annual energy use in more than 6 million homes — and $24.9 billion in fuel costs.
