Federal regulators for the first time in more than 30 years are proposing a redesign of the fuel economy label that consumers see on the window of new passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Trucking executives, fuel vendors and manufacturers of aftermarket engine technology said it is easier to get an alternative-fuel vehicle onto a motor carrier’s lot than it is to get a viable alternative fuel into a truck’s tank.

The U.S. retail diesel and gasoline price averages both declined for the third straight week, the Department of Energy said Aug. 30, with diesel dipping 1.9 cents a gallon to $2.938 and gasoline shedding 2.2 cents to $2.682, the lowest level in six months.

Oil prices to near $74 a barrel Friday following economic data that showed the service sector’s growth slowed, Bloomberg reported.

Tank cleaning firm QualaWash Holdings said Monday it has acquired Manfredi Special Services, another tank cleaning company.

The national price averages for retail diesel and gasoline declined moderately last week, as falling crude oil prices, rising petroleum inventories and bad news about housing suggest there is no pressure to cause a sustained increase in the cost of U.S. refined products.

Oil rose almost $2 Friday to finish the week over $75 a barrel, posting its first weekly gain in three weeks, Bloomberg reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Aug. 13 sent their proposed standards for heavy- and medium-duty trucks to the White House for review by the Office of Management and Budget.
