The Department of Veterans Affairs approved Werner Enterprise’s request to extend its 12-month professional truck driver apprenticeship program to 24 months, the truckload carrier said.

Werner ranks No. 16 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.

The extension means eligible veterans who have the Post 9/11 GI Bill now can  receive up to $22,555.20 of their tax-free education benefits while driving for Werner, in addition to their Werner pay, the company said.

“Extending our apprenticeship program is another opportunity for Werner to support and thank our country’s veterans for their service,” company President Derek Leathers said. “It will help veterans gain financial stability as they transition out of the military and into a new career path as a professional driver.”

Werner has pledged to hire 2,200 veterans and 200 spouses of veterans in 2015.
