US Telecom Group Says Regulator Is 'Suffocating' Internet Growth
Amid the U.K. government's push to spur the development of broadband Internet access, a U.S. telecom carrier alleged Monday that the country's telecom regulator is hindering Internet development.RSL Communications, which was seeking to introduce high-speed services throughout Europe, withdrew from the U.K. bidding process, contending that telecom regulator Oftel was hurting attempts to diminish the control of British Telecommunications. RSL made the allegation amid mounting criticism of Oftel's push to spur competition in the local voice market. As a result, Oftel could experience increased pressure to block BT's plans to integrate a substantial portion of its business with AT&T.
British Telecom verified yesterday that it was in negotiations with AT&T. The two companies are expected to form an alliance for providing phone services to corporate customers across the globe. But analysts are concerned that such a move would put British Telecom at odds with the government if British Telecom continues to control the market for small and mid-size enterprises.
