Toll Glitch Overcharges Truckers

A computer glitch in a program allowing truckers to pay California bridge tolls by credit card resulted in 30,000 customers being overcharged.

California Department of Transportation spokesman Greg Bayol said truckers, who are the primary users of the program, were charged two or three times for the same crossing. Truck tolls on the bridges range as high as $9.25 for each crossing.

The duplications occurred mainly between July and September when Caltrans was switching over from a manual system to an automatic billing software.

“It is not happening anymore, but we’re keeping a close eye on it,” said Bayol.
