The U.S. Supreme Court scheduled Jan. 20 as its next opinion day amid a worldwide wait for a ruling on President Donald Trump’s signature tariffs.

As is its practice, the court didn’t say which decisions are ready for release, only that rulings are possible when the justices take the bench at 10 a.m. ET.

If the tariff ruling isn’t released next week, it probably will be at least another month. The justices normally take the bench to issue their opinions in argued cases, and Jan. 21 is scheduled to be the last courtroom session until Feb. 20.

A ruling against Trump on tariffs would undercut the centerpiece of his economic agenda and deliver his biggest legal defeat since returning to the White House. At issue are his April 2 “Liberation Day” tariffs, which placed levies of 10%-50% on most imports, along with duties imposed on Canada, Mexico and China in the name of addressing fentanyl trafficking.

During arguments on Nov. 5, the court suggested skepticism that Trump had authority to impose the tariffs under a 1977 law that gives the president special powers during emergency situations. A decision against Trump could open the way for more than $130 billion in refunds.
