Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is heading to the Midwest midweek to chat with Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), chairwoman of the chamber’s trucking policy panel.

On Aug. 12, the two leaders are scheduled to meet at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Foxx and Fischer will lead a round-table discussion with several Nebraska-based transportation stakeholders.

After the round table, Foxx will join Fischer for a tour of a roadway improvement project in Lincoln.

The secretary is touting the 10th anniversary of the federal “Safe Routes to School” program, which examines conditions around schools as well as conducts projects and activities in communities to improve safety and accessibility.

“Safe Routes programs address the need for improved traffic safety around schools and more physical activity for children, the benefits of a renewed sense of community and the need to reduce traffic congestion near schools and lower the negative health and environmental consequences of that congestion,” Foxx wrote on his blog Aug. 10.
