Troopers Say Safety Crackdown Was Successful

Connecticut State Police claimed success with their ten-week Operation ROAR – or Roll Over Accident Reduction – which stepped up enforcement of speeding and aggressive driving by truckers as well as other drivers in hopes of reducing rollovers.

Focusing on spots along Interstates 95, 84, and 395 that are prone to truck rollovers, the crackdown resulted in 628 tickets, fines totaling $116,000, and 21 trucks taken out of service. The police plan to continue to crack down if further problems arise. Associated Press (04/06/00)

    Meritor, Arvin to Merge

Automotive suppliers Arvin Industries and Meritor Automotive said Thursday they plan to merge into a $7.5 billion combined firm named ArvinMeritor, to be based in Troy, Mich. Meritor Chairman and CEO Larry Yost will remain in those two posts at the new firm while Arvin Chairman and CEO Bill Hunt will take the positions of president and vice chairman.

The two companies are suppliers to OEMs and aftermarkets in the commercial vehicle, trailer, specialty equipment, and light vehicle sectors. TruckingInfo.com (04/06/00)

United States Cold Storage Offers Logistics Package for Border Trade

U.S. Cold Storage has initiated a freight consolidation program in Laredo, Texas, that provides clients with a thorough just-in-time LTL logistics package for receivers in Mexico. The program is called PDQ, for Proven Distribution Quality, and combines the prices of freight forwarders, brokers, carriers, and Mexican cold storage companies into a single bill for customers.

Working with Prime Inc. and the Mexican trucking company Frio Express, PDQ will serve Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Cancun from its three Laredo facilities. Laredo was chosen as USCS's consolidation point in 1989 because the commercial traffic crossing the Port of Laredo more than doubled from 1980 to 1990 as rail crossings rose 97%. Laredo also offers three Rio Grande bridges and a fourth under construction.

U.S. Cold Storage's other services include loading and unloading of floor-stacked meat, USDA inspections for imports and exports, authorized inspections for U.S. and Mexican agricultural agencies, labeling in English and Spanish; repackaging of bulk produce; and electronic data interchange.
