NITL to Explore NS, CSX Woes

The National Industrial Transportation League will hold a public forum Jan. 11 on the problems of CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern in the wake of their purchase and division of Conrail.

Shippers on the two railroads will be invited to air their difficulties at the forum, for which a location has not yet been determined.

CSX and NS bought Conrail for more than $10 billion in 1997 and began operations over its lines on June 1 only to suffer delays and difficulties that have forced many shippers to turn to truck transportation for their freight.
