Long Beach Port Approves New Clean Trucks Registration Process

In a first step toward satisfying its obligations detailed in an out-of-court settlement with American Trucking Associations, Port of Long Beach commissioners last week gave preliminary approval to a new drayage truck registration process that will simplify and limit requirements of the port’s clean trucks plan.

Port commissioners approved the new registration plan Monday by a 3-1 margin. A final vote is scheduled for Nov. 23, and the plan should take effect in 30 days, a port spokesman said.

The new registration process will re-place the port’s so-called concession plan and primarily will require that drayage operators pay a $250 fee and en-sure that their trucks meet the minimum environmental, safety and security requirements of the plan.

“But in no way will the new registration process change the progressive ban on dirty trucks,” said Alex Cherin, head of the port’s trade relations and operations.

Long Beach and ATA officials reached their settlement on Oct. 19 after several months of private negotiations.
