Geodis opened its first dedicated healthcare cold chain cross-dock facility in the Americas, the company announced April 22.
The Chicago-based facility provides short-term stowage and specialized handling for pharmaceutical air and ocean exports and imports. Geodis said the site will act as a critical node within its freight-forwarding network to support those operations. It features a 78,000-square-foot container freight station and bonded facility.
“By providing full visibility and internal control within our growing network of certified sites, we ensure that these sensitive air and ocean shipments are protected every step of the way,” said Josh Jungwirth, executive vice president of freight forwarding for Geodis in Americas.
Geodis has four branches across the U.S. Chicago is a Certified Cargo Screening Facilites location for exports and now has cold chain storage capacity. The Transportation Security Administration-vetted site is located near O’Hare International Airport so that it can serve as a high-velocity hub for global air and ocean freight. The facility allows the company to maintain end-to-end internal control over temperature-sensitive healthcare cargo as it moves through its global network.
“In the healthcare vertical, the stakes are uniquely high,” Jungwirth said. “At the end of every supply chain we manage is a patient. This Chicago facility is a milestone in our mission to be a reliable growth partner for clients who require the highest standards of care.”
Geodis said the cold chain storage occupies 5,200 square feet within the new facility. The space is divided into two separate temperature-controlled zones to accommodate the specific needs of the pharmaceutical vertical. The first zone consists of 4,600 square feet dedicated to deep cold storage, and the second zone covers 600 square feet for refrigerated cold storage.
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Geodis (North America) ranks No. 24 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest logistics companies in North America. Parent company SNCF Group is headquartered in France.
