Who: Winners from nine categories at the state level have advanced to the national competition, where a Grand Champion will be crowned

What: Contestants are judged on a written examination and their driving skills

When: Aug. 14-17

Where: Pittsburgh

At first glance, the Kansas Truck Driving Championships might be more notable by who is absent than who will be the ultimate winner.

FedEx Freight Ace Don Logan, last year’s Grand Champ out of the Tank Truck division, isn’t competing at Kansas Expocentre in Topeka on June 14-15.

With Logan out of the picture, the field can breathe a collective sigh of relief that the man with five state Grand Champion titles, one on the national stage (2012) and three additional national division titles won’t be behind the wheel this weekend. In all, Logan has made a dozen trips to the National Truck Driving Championships.

In 2018’s state competition, FedEx Freight drivers captured four classes, YRC Freight garnered two titles and UPS Freight and Walmart Transportation took one apiece.

So … who does that leave as a favorite to claim a spot in 2019 NTDC, set for Pittsburgh on Aug. 14-17? It’s anybody’s guess.
