he average U.S. retail price of diesel fuel declined 2.7 cents per gallon to $1.444, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

Commercial trucking's dominant fuel has now dropped 5.9 cents since Aug. 25 and is at its lowest point since July 28.

Diesel’s most recent decrease would save truckers $11.80 on a 200-gallon purchase at retail pumps. The price is now only 2.7 cents higher than the corresponding week a year ago, DOE said.

DOE also said the average price for regular gasoline fell 5.4 cents to $1.643 per gallon.

Gasoline, used by about one-third of trucking, also has declined four straight weeks.

The price of diesel decreased throughout the country, with all five of DOE's major geographic regions reporting a decline of at least 1.8 cents.

The largest decline was 3.4 cents in the Midwest, where DOE said the average price on Monday was $1.426.

Each week, DOE surveys 350 diesel-filling stations to compile a national snapshot price of diesel and gasoline.
