Word that U.S. authorities are pulling over Canadian truck drivers and deporting them — minus their equipment in some cases — has angered truckers north of the border.
Some restrictions on the movement of Canadian equipment within the United States have been lifted by the U.S. Customs Service. However, the Immigration and Naturalization Service has not issued regulations to mirror the flexibility allowed by customs.
The Customs Service altered its cabotage rules in February to allow Canadian trucks to carry freight if the trucks are returning to Canada or going to pick up cargo for export to Canada. Also, the new guidelines allow freight that originates in Canada to be transported anywhere in the United States, regardless of what tractor hauls it.
But INS regulations are creating an impediment.
