Daimler to Recall Freightliner Cascadia Trucks for Light Issue

Daimler Trucks North America will recall about 46,000 Freightliner Cascadia trucks due to a software glitch that may cause the daytime running lights to turn off, the company said in a report released by the federal government Wednesday.

The problem affects all model-year 2013 and 2014 Cascadias produced from May 7, 2012, to March 2, 2013, totaling 42,823 in the United States and 3,223 in Canada, DTNA estimated in its March 15 report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In the trucks to be recalled, the turn signal lights also function as daytime running lights. The lights may not stay illuminated when the driver deactivates the turn signal.

DTNA has not determined how it will fix the glitch, it told NHTSA. It will notify customers, dealers and distributors by May 15.

“DTNA takes a proactive approach to vehicle safety and has voluntarily decided to recall certain vehicles,” DTNA spokesman David Giroux told Transport Topics. No customers have reported any accidents or injuries due to the issue, he said.

Software produced by Germany-based Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. is responsible for the problem, DTNA said in its defect report, which it also submitted to Transport Canada.
