LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Toll management provider Bestpass Inc. rolled out a new transponder that covers nearly all of the 48 contiguous states and soon may include parts of Canada.

The company announced here April 1 that the new Bestpass Complete will cover 95% of all toll roads and bridges. Truck operators using the system pay a monthly subscription fee in addition to tolls, said company President John Andrews. Based in Albany, New York, Bestpass is a subsidiary of the New York State Motor Truck Association.

“With this you can get all major toll facilities on one device,” Andrews said at a Mid-America Trucking Show press event. “We have 100,000 on order for everyone from owner-operators to big fleets.”

The service will be “live in a couple of months,” Andrews said, and will include coverage in Oklahoma, which is expected by the end of April.

He said the subscription rate will be $7 to $10 per month for an owner-operator and as low as 50 cents per truck for a large fleet. He said FedEx Corp. and truckload carrier Schneider are customers.

Andrews said a fleet of 100 to 500 trucks is the “sweet spot” for Bestpass.

Bestpass customers can keep their current transponders if they match up well with the carrier’s service area, but if they want to expand to national service, trucks will need new transponders.
