ellow Roadway Corp. may become the first U.S. trucking company to operate in China, the Financial Times reported Sunday.

Yellow Roadway Chief Executive Officer Bill Zollars said the company was in talks with a number of Chinese truck companies that it would could either acquire or work with in joint ventures, the British newspaper reported.

The move was in response to growing demand from western importers for reliable freight transportation services in China, the Financial Times said.

Yellow Roadway may target U.S. companies like Wal-Mart and Home Depot, which import goods from China, as potential customers, the paper said.

Zollars told the Financial Times Yellow Roadway was aiming to complete its first deal with a Chinese operator this year, possibly within the next few weeks, and that it would not take a significant investment.

he paper said Yellow Roadway bought a freight management business in China in March, but said more significant moves would be the first time that the company had operated its own vehicles outside North America.

China’s truck market is highly fragmented, with no company owning more than 200 trucks, Zollars told the paper.

Yellow Roadway is ranked No. 3 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
