A major critic of trucking and the industry’s most powerful group agreed last week to work together on improving trucking safety and to support formation of a blue ribbon panel that would study the issues further.

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), who wants to move trucking’s top safety agency to a new home, invited American Trucking Associations, whom he has treated as a nemesis, to participate in a dialogue on everything from inspections to the future of trucking oversight in the federal government.

ATA President Walter B. McCormick Jr. confirmed Feb. 11 that the association has been talking with Wolf and will participate in the sessions.

Former congressman Norm Mineta is expected to head up the study commission at the request of Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater, according to sources.
