Winter Storm Causing Travel Problems in North Carolina, New England

storm packing snow, sleet and freezing rain stranded hundreds of motorists on Interstate 95 in eastern North Carolina early Monday and knocked out power to thousands of residents, news services reported.

North Carolina public safety spokeswoman Patty McQuillan told the Associated Press that traffic on southbound I-95 in Wilson County was backed up to the Virginia line. I-95 is the main north-south route along the East Coast.

In parts of Virginia, as much as 14 inches of snow had fallen, and ice was causing dozens of accidents.



Meanwhile, the National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning until on Monday morning for much of New England as more than a foot of snow was falling on parts of the region.

Winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph were causing serious vision problems on highways, the AP reported.

Logan International Airport in Boston was operating a single runway Monday morning, and substantial delays were expected, airport spokesman Phil Orlandella told AP.

Meanwhile, south Texas was still digging out from a record snowfall, Reuters reported. More than a foot of snow fell late last week in parts of Texas, giving the city of Victoria its first white Christmas in 86 years.
